Experience: I am a PhD student in Folklore/Public Culture in UT Austin’s Department of Anthropology. While completing my M.A., I served as teaching assistant in two upper division undergraduate Anthropology courses, “Urban Anthropology” and “The US Public Sphere.” The latter was a writing-intensive course for which I individually mentored students on their term papers and weekly journals. At this time I also tutored students in writing at the House of Tutors in west Austin. I am currently the Folklore/Public Culture graduate assistant, which involves graphic design work, assisting the departmental Director with grant applications, and corresponding with inquiring graduate students about the program.

Although my undergraduate and graduate studies have focused on Anthropology, my wider interests include art, philosophy, literature, and US history. In the past, my anthropological research projects revolved around the history of leisure spaces in the US, from Coney Island to Disneyland. My current research and writing project deals with do-it-yourself art and ecology projects in Austin.

With the do-it-yourself in mind, I want to tutor because I enjoy teaching students how to teach themselves. Writing, computer skills, strong reading skills, and the like usually take a backseat to content in most educational settings, but in tutoring, these are the very things being taught. I also find teaching one student at a time to be a more rewarding experience than teaching groups of students.
Hobbies:I co-curate an in-home museum, open to the public every Saturday. This involves teaching, writing and research, carpentry work, painting, framing, and graphic design. I love the ever-emergent challenges and learning experiences involved in the project! I
