I have noticed through my education that most schools and colleges focus on memorization and regurgitation of information in the classroom. All graduate and professional schools look for applicants that can operate on a firm base of knowledge with an ability to learn and adapt to their specific field. Because of this, I have a very understanding-based approach to teaching which prepares students to take the next step in their academic careers.

I have tutored for a couple years for multiple subjects and tests. I have taken 11 AP tests and passed them all with four and fives. I also scored in top 6% on my MCAT.

Hobbies:

Athletics: Fencing, Boxing, Chess-Boxing, Gymnastics
Games: Chess & Go
Volunteer: Yellow Bike Project (making bikes), 21st Co-op (completing construction projects)
Interests: Bio-Diesel production, Cliff-Diving, & taking on new challenges

Hourly Rate:
$25.00/hr

Available Days/Times:
Any day in the evening
Any day in the afternoon

Lives Near:
78705 zip code

Click here to contact this tutor

I am in the Communications Senior Fellows Honors program, as well as the Business Foundations and Business Economics Option.

I've worked with students anywhere from 10 to 25 years old, including overcoming language barriers. I have previously tutored: math, physics, reading, history, government, philosophy, economics, and college entrance exams.

My SAT/ACT scores were in the 95 and 98 percentiles, respectively. AP Eng. I and AP Physics C: 3. AP Calc. (AB) and AP US History: 4.

I enjoy both challenging myself and helping others overcome challenges by contributing my knowledge and experience. My greatest strength is probably in my ability to simplify and communicate concepts and information. My strongest subjects are in social science fields, although I have had significant success in technical subjects also.

Hobbies:

I'm a friendly and outgoing person. I like watching sports, especially football. I like reading, writing, and photography when I get the chance, and I love watching movies. My favorite activity is just meeting new people.

Hourly Rate:
$20.00/hr

Available Days/Times:
Weekdays in the evening
Weekends after 12 Noon
Weekdays in the morning

Lives Near:
78705 zip code

Click here to contact this tutor

I've made an A in every Japanese course here at UT, and have tutored friends in the language before. I can provide help with all aspects of Japanese, including speaking, reading, and writing. Like I said, I've taken all the classes here, so I'll know exactly what you're going through and have a great understanding of course materials.

Austin Tutor Profile: Biosciences major at the University of Texas

I've had experience writing many lesson plans for different topics in science and have taught lessons to classes as big as 30 students with and without a partner. My evaluations from teachers have said that I work the best with students when it's one-on-one and I believe that to be true as well. I took algebra, pre-calculus and differential calculus in high school and took pre-calculus once more at UT to gain better understanding and made in A in both that and differential calculus at the University of Texas. I made a B in integral calculus so I don't feel I'm strong enough to tutor in that level of math. I've also taken introductory biology classes and genetics made both A's and B's but I feel that is my strongest subject because I love the biology and my major is now Human Biology. I've taken two semesters of chemistry and I just finished taking organic chemistry and made B's in those classes so I feel I have a lot of knowledge in chemistry and would enjoy helping someone in that subject as well. I think I work well with younger students because this past year I was a literacy/science tutor at Lucy Read Elementary school and I'm going to continue that in the fall of this year. I've had plenty of experience since high school working with younger students because I was part of several mentoring and tutoring programs and in the past two years I've volunteered at the boys and girls club.
I scored a 28 on the ACT as a sophomore in high school but I was valedictorian of my school so I did not take any other tests to get into college because I already knew I would get in with the top 10 % rule.I have also been tutored before for calculus and organic chemistry because they've been pretty tough subjects for me so I understand what it's like being tutored and I think it has helped me become a better tutor.

Hobbies:

Although I was involved in just about every sport in high school such as basketball, volleyball, softball, track, and cross country I've always been somewhat of a nerd when it comes to school. I've always volunteered for different organizations since high

Hourly Rate:
$23.00/hr

Available Days/Times:
Weekends in the afternoon
Weekdays after 12 Noon

Lives Near:
78705 zip code

Click here to contact this tutor

Austin Tutor Profile: Anthropology major at the University of Texas

Tutor Profile
Grad student at the University of Texas with a 4.00 GPA
Majoring in Anthropology

Gender:
Male

Preferred Subjects
Computer Skills, English (Writing), History, and Philosophy

Experience:

I am a PhD student in Folklore/Public Culture in UT Austin’s Department of Anthropology. While completing my M.A., I served as teaching assistant in two upper division undergraduate Anthropology courses, “Urban Anthropology” and “The US Public Sphere.” The latter was a writing-intensive course for which I individually mentored students on their term papers and weekly journals. At this time I also tutored students in writing at the House of Tutors in west Austin. I am currently the Folklore/Public Culture graduate assistant, which involves graphic design work, assisting the departmental Director with grant applications, and corresponding with inquiring graduate students about the program.

Although my undergraduate and graduate studies have focused on Anthropology, my wider interests include art, philosophy, literature, and US history. In the past, my anthropological research projects revolved around the history of leisure spaces in the US, from Coney Island to Disneyland. My current research and writing project deals with do-it-yourself art and ecology projects in Austin.

With the do-it-yourself in mind, I want to tutor because I enjoy teaching students how to teach themselves. Writing, computer skills, strong reading skills, and the like usually take a backseat to content in most educational settings, but in tutoring, these are the very things being taught. I also find teaching one student at a time to be a more rewarding experience than teaching groups of students.

Hobbies:

I co-curate an in-home museum, open to the public every Saturday. This involves teaching, writing and research, carpentry work, painting, framing, and graphic design. I love the ever-emergent challenges and learning experiences involved in the project! I

Hourly Rate:
$25.00/hr

Available Days/Times:
Wednesday at any time
Tues/Thurs at any time
Monday at any time

Lives Near:
78702 zip code

Click here to contact this tutor

Austin Tutor Profile: Neurosciences and Physics major at the University of Texas

Tutor Profile
Phd candidate at the University of Texas with a 4.00 GPA
Majoring in Neurosciences, and Physics

Gender:
Male

Preferred Subjects
General Math, Study Skills/Organization, English (ESL), General Science, Physics, Biology, Trigonometry, Statistics, Algebra, and SAT Math

Experience:

I am a down-to-earth, approachable grad student with 8 years of tutoring experience. My academic background is in science, but I have experience tutoring a wide range of subjects.

Courses for which I have paid, referred tutoring experience include: math, biology, English, history, geography, physics, and study skills. I have worked with high school and college students.

I have a bachelor's degree in physics from Tulane University, and a master's degree in neuroscience from Tulane. I am a PhD candidate in neuroscience at UT, with a 4.0 cumulative GPA. My GRE scores are 760 math, 670 verbal.

Good tutoring means having a balance between feeling comfortable and being challenged. So when I work with a student, we go back and forth between old and new material. The old material is comfortable and provides a foothold, and then then we go on to more challenging new material. It takes an experienced tutor to know when to challenge and when to back up and regain our footing.

This approach results in:
(1) Integrating old and new material so nothing is learned as a "separate" or unrelated concept
(2) A session that is neither boring nor frustrating
(3) Measurable progress in each session

I strongly believe students excel when they feel good about what they are doing. Nobody learns well when they are overwhelmed or bored.

My tutoring produces real results. Some successful experiences my students have had: finally understanding (and enjoying!) the math they thought they hated, going into an English test feeling prepared, writing a killer paper, acing an exam, and adopting good study habits which they used for years to come. It is very enjoyable for me to see a student come in at first feeling like they'll never pass a class, and then meeting with them one last time to see the A on their final paper, project, or course grade. It never gets old and gives me a good feeling every time. I guarantee you are smarter than you think!

Hobbies:

When I'm not in school or tutoring, I like: playing piano, Argentine tango, watching movies, swimming, biking.

Hourly Rate:
$30.00/hr

Available Days/Times:
Weekdays after 3PM
Weekends in the morning

Lives Near:
78705 zip code

Click here to contact this tutor
